Q: One visitor asked, "My husband installed oak boards on our stairs. I am planning on painting the backs and the railing white. Can you tell me what kind of paint would be best. I have 4 kids so it has to be durable."
A: I work with polyurethane coatings. I am not a paint expert. I will tell you this however. Use a good specialty primer such as Zinsser first. Last thing you want is for your paint job to peel. I would go to your local paint store and inquire regarding their recommendation. With proper priming, a latex should work without the "chipping" that often happens with an oil, especially when the previous coating has not been prepared to accept it. Which type is up to the paint expert.
